Marquez: “I had to attack Bezzecchi in turn-1, I had already decided before the start”

A race in a corner

More ‘Sprint’ than this is impossible. The Saturday MotoGP race at Aragon saw the podium decided already in turn 1: the perfect overtaking maneuver carried out by Marc Marquez in the corner against Marco Bezzecchi essentially decided the race. The reigning champion forcibly took the first position and, slightly pushing Bezzecchi wide, also favored the leap into second place by his brother Alex. The rider from Rimini who started from pole position then had to settle for third place.

Speaking to the microphones of Sky Sport MotoGP, Marquez emphasized how crucial it was for him to stay ahead of Bezzecchi during the first lap since the Aprilia rider had the soft tire at the rear, while the red #93 had chosen the medium: “When I saw that Marco was starting with the soft I knew that the only chance was to go inside hard in turn 1. I did so because otherwise with the medium it takes a bit more time to warm it up well and in those first two-three laps surely with the soft you can create a big gap. But for us the only chance was to use the medium tire, because the soft would have been destroyed. The medium is good, it is very consistent and that’s why the strategy was that: start and attack in turn 1“.

Reasoned strategy

“In left corners I feel very good doing this kind of maneuvers – Marquez explained further – but the start was not very good, the bike popped up a bit and for a moment I thought it would be difficult to do what I had in mind. But I told myself anyway ‘let’s go inside’ and it went well. There are moments in the race when you have to take the risk and I had already decided before starting the Sprint, when I saw that he was going with the soft, that that was the right moment“.
