The Race Direction did not intervene
Barcelona’s nightmare Sunday ended with a rather chaotic ‘Race-3’ in which the Aprilia Trackhouse riders stood out negatively. Raul Fernandez and Ai Ogura took down two riders competing for the world title, namely Jorge Martin and Pedro Acosta.
Surprisingly, Raul Fernandez was not penalized and Ai Ogura got away with a three-second penalty equivalent to a hypothetical long lap penalty which he could not serve because the incident happened at the last corner. This decision opens disturbing scenarios for possible other clashes at the last corner because the penalty was, to say the least, soft.
Raul Fernandez emphasized that he was not at fault in the incident with Martin because the latter closed him off instead of raising the bike to give him the necessary space to complete the maneuver, a thesis also supported by the Race Direction which defined the episode as a racing incident.

Lorenzo stunned
According to Jorge Lorenzo, on the other hand, the Trackhouse rider should have been penalized: “I believe Raúl did not manage to get alongside Martín, leaving Jorge the possibility to decide whether to raise the bike or not – said the Majorcan during the broadcast Duralavida – Raúl arrives a bit late in that overtaking and does not complete it. And causes Martín’s fall and the loss of many points. In my opinion, there should have been a penalty, but obviously the Stewards think differently.”
