MotoGP Austria, the Qualifying Report
On Austrian Friday it is a one-man show by Pedro Acosta. After leading FP1, the Tiburón repeats in the Red Bull Ring Qualifying, where he strings together fast laps one after another and finishes in 1:28.381, six tenths off Jorge Martin’s track record. The Spaniard is on fire, taking command halfway through the session and never letting go: considering his great braking skills, the growth of KTM (Acosta comes from two consecutive podiums) and the Austrians’ history on their home circuit, the Spaniard can think of joining the fight between Marc Marquez and the Aprilias even with the points at stake.

Second position for Fermin Aldeguer, the best of the Ducatis, at +0.127; also applause-worthy is Ai Ogura‘s performance (+0.187), third on his return to the track after fracturing his left thumb. The two “roommates” of the first place in the standings are separated by 18 thousandths, with Marc Marquez fourth and Jorge Martin fifth. Marco Bezzecchi starts further back but qualifies for Q2 with the ninth time, two tenths behind his World Championship rivals.
Also advancing are Fabio Di Giannantonio, Brad Binder, Alex Marquez (who reacted well after a bad crash on the straight after turn 1, causing a ten-minute red flag) and Fabio Quartararo. Francesco Bagnaia continues his nightmare period, 18th, here paying particularly for braking problems with the GP26. Raul Fernandez is also disappointing, 19th. Finally, a dangerous incident at the start of the session is worth noting, when Johann Zarco falls at Schlossgold and risks being run over by teammate Diogo Moreira, who went wide into the gravel despite the yellow flags.
