The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated a recall involving about 1.4 million Ford F-150 pickups in the USA. The action follows an investigation into reports of unexpected downshifts. This is a problem that, according to the NHTSA, could affect the normal operation of the transmission while driving. According to the regulator’s recent communication, the decision is linked to potential implications for driver safety.

Major Ford recall in the USA
The NHTSA explained that the Blue Oval automaker was aware of two cases of injuries potentially related to the problem and an additional reported incident. The solution planned for dealerships will consist of a software update for the powertrain control module of the affected vehicles. The goal is to properly manage signals from the transmission systems and reduce the likelihood of unintended downshifts.
1.4 million F-150s targeted
The investigation, moreover, was progressively extended: the preliminary evaluation was first initiated in March of last year after receiving complaints regarding 2015-2017 F-150s equipped with the “6R80” transmission. Previously, Ford had indicated that the cause might be related to wear of electrical connections over time, due to heat and vibrations, which could lead to a loss of signal from the transmission position sensor. However, the NHTSA emphasized that incorrect signals can cause an unintended downshift.
