The new Drivalia Observatory analyzed the trend of bookings for the summer quarter June-August 2026, examining over 50,000 short-term rental requests. The data outlines a now structural trend: the demand for low-emission cars is no longer an exception, but an increasingly widespread choice. At the same time, travelers plan further in advance, extend the length of their stay, and decisively look to the international horizon, which represents the largest share of bookings.

Summer rentals 2026
According to the Observatory’s results, summer 2026 runs on electricity: electrified cars represent 54% of Drivalia’s overall preferences. Among these, hybrid models lead the ranking with 44% of choices, up two percentage points from the 42% recorded last year. Electric cars follow, stable at 10%. At the same time, a progressive contraction of traditional engines is observed: thermal engines drop from 48% in summer 2025 to the current 46%, confirming a shift towards more sustainable solutions.
Electrification takes hold
The Observatory also captures habits and origins of travelers. To secure the best rates, the average booking lead time rises to 31 days (compared to 24 in 2025), while the average rental duration extends to 9 days (from 8 the previous year). On the demographic and geographic front, Italy continues to be highly attractive for foreign tourism: a full 61% of bookings come from abroad, with Italy at 38%, Germany at 26%, the USA at 17%, and France at 15%. Regionally, the South and Islands dominate the destination rankings, led by Sicily (16.9%), Sardinia (15.8%), and Puglia (14.5%). And when specifically looking at customers choosing electrified vehicles (BEV and PHEV), Sardinia becomes first with 19.2%, followed by Sicily and Puglia both at 16.2%.
