Dacia has shelved plans for a third model in the C-segment. Autocar reports that the Romanian car manufacturer intends to focus on developing its new line of electric cars, including the next-generation Sandero. A decision that may come as a surprise given the company’s trend in the segment: Bigster was ranked as the best-selling C-segment SUV in Europe in the second half of last year. Furthermore, the Romanian company expects this segment to represent a third of its sales by 2030.
Dacia abandons plans for the C-segment
Yet, Dacia wants to continue its commitment to launching four new electric vehicles by 2030, starting soon with the new Spring. For this reason, the Romanian company has, at least for the moment, abandoned plans to add a third petrol model in the C-segment. Initially, the Striker was to be the second model in this line, with the third closely related model planned for next year. Now, however, Dacia’s CEO, Katrin Adt, has dampened enthusiasm regarding the prospect of new mid-sized petrol cars in the near future, indicating electric vehicles and smaller cars as priorities.
Focus on electric cars
“We have a very successful model with the Bigster, we see potential for the new Striker and at the moment we have no other plans. We are a brand with few products, and we are focusing on the next generation of Sandero. So at the moment there is nothing to announce,” Adt said when asked for an update on the next car. The company had not provided any details on what the new car would be like. And, given the trend, it is possible that it will not do so for a while yet.
