Can the break help Aston Martin?
The sudden spring break fits perfectly for Aston Martin of Lawrence Stroll and Adrian Newey: from a purely sporting point of view, the Silverstone team has sunk into a crisis impossible to predict before the season – in fact, at the time the team was even considered one of the possible favorites to win the title – and therefore the absence of races should be seen as an opportunity to get back to work using the extra time without GPs to solve the long-standing problems that are sinking the ambitions of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll to compete at the top of the category. According to the former driver, now technical commentator for Sky Uk, Martin Brundle, the April break will not be enough to get out of the nightmare in which the English team and Honda have gotten themselves.
Martin Brundle’s pessimism
“It’s quite a painful situation, isn’t it? It’s almost like putting your finger in the wound but – explains Martin Brundle talking about the Aston Martin case during the podcast The F1 Show – I think it’s a nightmare from any point of view you look at it. They are neither fast nor reliable and, in an era characterized by relentless Formula 1 calendars and spending caps, it will be very difficult to reverse the trend in time. They must first understand how to intervene”.

The problem is not only related to the chassis designed by the working group under Adrian Newey – who, however, according to the latest reconstructions, definitely has his problems – but also to the Honda power unit, which has effectively started from scratch after leaving F1 in 2021 and losing many of its top engineers: “Honda must hire the right people, find the correct path for development. I don’t think the situation will improve before 2027, it’s a horror show and all we can do is watch this suffering all year long. Obviously, to some extent they will manage to improve a bit, but sometimes they lose three or four seconds per lap. In short, at the moment Aston Martin belongs to a different category compared to the leaders. It will take time”.
