BMW, the Munich plant is transforming

The BMW Group plant in Munich is entering a crucial phase of its transformation. In August, the series production of the BMW i3, the second model of the Neue Klasse, will begin, marking the start of the introduction of this new architecture into the German Group’s global production network. This step is not just a model change, but the result of a consistent production strategy that has guided targeted investments in technology, digitalization, and artificial intelligence. As Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management responsible for Production, emphasizes, the preparation has been rigorous and has laid the foundation for the launch of the next models in all the giant’s plants.

BMW, new production phase in Munich

In recent years, the Munich plant has undergone a profound modernization process to become more efficient, flexible, and digital. The plant continued to produce up to 1.000 vehicles per day even during the works, integrating a new body shop, a state-of-the-art assembly area, and new logistics areas on about one-third of the total surface area. The combination of process optimization, automation and digitalization interventions, and the simplified architecture of the Neue Klasse itself contribute to significantly improving overall efficiency.

Electric future of the plant

Looking to the future, the plant will exclusively produce fully electric vehicles starting from 2027, thanks to an investment of approximately 650 million euros and proactive planning that has involved development teams and suppliers. According to Peter Weber, head of the plant, the start of production of the BMW i3 will allow for a reduction in the plant’s overall costs of about 10%, bringing them below the levels of the current generation of vehicles. The expected result is therefore a historic site, integrated into the urban fabric for over a century, but transformed into a modern and highly efficient plant, ready to support the transition to electric mobility.
