BMW iX5 Hydrogen, new storage technology

BMW introduces a new hydrogen storage technology for the future iX5 Hydrogen designed to optimize space, efficiency, and safety. The tank configuration, with optimized dimensions and layout, allows for greater range, up to 750 km. At the heart of the solution is the Hydrogen Flat Storage system, designed by the German manufacturer to use the volume available inside the vehicle in a very rational way. Its integration is compatible with the Gen6 high-voltage battery, without compromising cabin space.

The new BMW iX5 Hydrogen

Result: models with fuel cell technology can be developed and produced with flexibility, even on the same assembly line as versions with other types of propulsion. In detail, the Hydrogen Flat Storage system is based on seven flat high-pressure tanks made of carbon fiber reinforced composite material. These are connected in parallel and integrated into a robust metal frame, while the peculiarity of the design lies in the fact that, instead of individual separate containers, there are multiple chambers connected to each other to form a single closed unit, managed by a central main valve.

Highly flexible production

The optimized storage concept allows the BMW iX5 Hydrogen to store at least seven kilograms of hydrogen and to achieve a full refueling in less than five minutes. In addition to the benefits in terms of range and practicality, the technology also strengthens the industrial and safety aspects: the 700 bar tanks benefit from the mechanical protection offered by the vehicle structure, further increasing the level of reliability. Thanks to the flexible platform of the new X5, the model can be produced in different propulsion variants, favoring production synergies, reducing complexity and costs and paving the way for a large-scale rollout of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen in the production network starting from 2028.
