The new generation BMW 1 Series will arrive in 2028 with both electric and hybrid engines. Autocar reports this, explaining that the German manufacturer’s goal is to attract a younger clientele in the main European markets. Oliver Heilmer, head of design for BMW’s compact cars, described the current 1 Series as one of the brand’s main pillars. And looking ahead, the prospects are good.

The new BMW 1 Series is coming
Currently, the model is offered only with internal combustion engines. But with the fourth generation, the introduction of an electric version is planned which, like the new 3 Series and i3, will be based on a specific platform but will share style and identity with the internal combustion variants. And while rivals Mercedes A-Class and Audi A2 will adopt a mini-MPV look, the new 1 Series will remain faithful to its hatchback shape, while also incorporating elements of the Neue Klasse design language.
Hybrid and electric versions
As mentioned, BMW considers the 1 Series an important part of its business, despite the growing preference of buyers for SUVs and crossovers. Nearly 200,000 units were sold globally last year. Product manager Bernd Korber stated that there is still a need for a hatchback version of the 1 Series in the range, as it continues to be a great success in key markets such as Italy and France. “If you want to be a global player, you have to take care of those markets where the 1 Series market share is extremely high,” he explained. And he concluded: “If we want to keep the brand young and retain customers within our portfolio, the 1 Series is then very important“.
