Antonelli great in Canada
In Kimi Antonelli‘s eyes reign youth and ambition. In his head, however, there is the awareness of being not only capable of winning races but also of thinking about the title. It can only be so with a +43 on George Russell, the result of four consecutive wins and a bit of luck, which also played a part in Montreal.

However, those who link Antonelli’s victory in Montreal solely to Russell’s retirement are wrong. The Bolognese was indeed superior to his teammate in terms of pace, he kept up with him for almost thirty laps, constantly glued to his slipstream and preventing him from managing the race calmly. And, without a dubious call from the Mercedes pit wall (which on the 22nd lap asked him to give the position back to Russell when in fact it was the Brit who closed the space on him), he might have been able to pull away even before the #63 retired.
Antonelli’s words
“It was not the way I wanted to win, honestly: it was a pity for George, in the end it would have been a very tough battle. Although in that stint I had a bit more pace. I made a few too many mistakes, like locking up in turn 10, and it was not ideal“, this was his comment to Sky Sport F1. “I was still close, then he had the technical problem and I found myself alone, from that moment I tried to bring the car home“.

“It is definitely a track where he has always been strong, so being close to George, and being even faster at times, is definitely a good sign. I don’t think I drove at the level of Miami, this is a point I should work on, but in the end it went well, also because today I was much calmer than yesterday“, he added. “There were a couple of episodes still a bit on the edge, but today I was much calmer, I preferred to wait much longer, forcing him more into error. I also made a few too many mistakes, and that must not happen again“.
