The new generation of Alfa Romeo Giulia will arrive in 2028 along with the new Stelvio SUV. Not only that: the gritty top-of-the-range sedan Quadrifoglio will return to compete with the BMW M3, with a choice of electric and petrol engines. This was announced by Autocar, which interviewed the CEO of the Biscione house, Santo Ficili, on the matter. Who was very clear on one concept: not everyone is ready for electric vehicles yet.

Alfa Romeo awaits the new Giulia and Stelvio
“We need to find a way to meet the needs of our customers. What does that mean? That we must focus on battery electric vehicles but also on all other types of internal combustion powertrains, therefore internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrids. This is the direction“, explained Ficili. This is why the current Giulia and Stelvio will remain on sale until 2027. When the new versions arrive, they will still adopt a new advanced platform that will allow a significant improvement in electric technology, including ultra-fast charging. But the architecture has been re-engineered so that the brand can continue to offer plug-in hybrid powertrains.
New platform and different engines
According to rumors, both Giulia and Stelvio will grow in size following the transition to the new platform, and will adopt a more aerodynamic design with the aim of reducing air resistance and maximizing the range of the electric versions. Furthermore, they will adopt the new stylistic language of the Biscione introduced with the compact SUV Junior. Internally, however, the use of screens will be largely limited to a single central display, maintaining Alfa Romeo’s typical “telescope” instrument cluster, although most likely digitized.

Confirmation for Quadrifoglio
As for the engine range, the two cars are expected to be initially equipped with four-cylinder turbo petrol engines, which will then be integrated with mild-hybrid technology to reduce emissions. It is not yet clear which engine will power the plug-in hybrid versions of Giulia and Stelvio, while for the full electric variants, the STLA Large platform can accommodate battery packs with capacities from 85 kWh to 118 kWh, for a range of over 640 km. Finally, both Giulia and Stelvio will continue to be crowned by the Quadrifoglio versions, which will be equipped with both electric and combustion powertrains.
