MotoGP Barcelona, the Race Report

Emotions, adrenaline, but above all a lot of fear at Montmeló. The protagonists are Pedro Acosta and Alex Marquez, who together with Raul Fernandez give us 12 breathtaking laps, with last-minute braking and overtakes for very strong hearts. The Spaniards ignite Montmeló, but the enthusiasm freezes on the straight leading to turn 10, when Acosta’s KTM suffers an engine problem and is hit at 300 km/h by Alex, who rolls heavily into the gravel. The Ducati, torn apart, is a runaway bullet, whose debris knocks down Fabio Di Giannantonio and hits Raul Fernandez, Jorge Martin, and Johann Zarco.

Those who think they can breathe a sigh of relief must reconsider, because on the restart Zarco misses the braking at turn 1, falls hitting Luca Marini and Francesco Bagnaia, and remains hooked with his left leg on the rear of “Pecco”’s Ducati: “non-critical” conditions for #5, but clearly his condition will be monitored in the coming hours. Best wishes for a speedy recovery go to the Frenchman and Marquez, who never lost consciousness but are at the Sant Cugat del Vallès hospital for further examinations.

We can only start from these two great scares in the report of a GP that once again reminded us of the inherent risks in motorcycling, especially on two wheels. The race is cursed, but fortunately it also tells another story. After two red flags and at the third start, a 19-rider Sprint is practically born (those riders able to race and still having a spare bike are admitted): the constant is a tough Acosta, chased by Mir and Di Giannantonio, while the big names struggle (Bagnaia and Bezzecchi have no pace, Martin is dramatically taken down by Fernandez at turn 5). The winner is precisely “Diggia”, who takes his second top-class victory after Lusail 2023 thanks to a decisive overtake on Acosta at turn 10 two laps from the end. The Spaniard struggles in the last corners and is incredibly sent into the gravel by Ai Ogura at the last corner: on the podium at the end are Mir and Aldeguer, with the Japanese rider ahead of Bagnaia and Bezzecchi, but he is penalized by 3” on race time for the contact with the Tiburón.

Is it over? Not at all, because the cherry on top of the craziest race in recent years is the investigation by the stewards on Bagnaia, Mir, Miller, Razgatlioglu, Augusto Fernandez, and Rins for irregular tire pressure: if the infractions are confirmed, the classification would undergo a further shake-up. The biggest beneficiary would be Bezzecchi, who would claim an unexpected podium given the level shown this weekend.
