Dutch regulatory authorities have approved the use of Tesla’s autonomous driving software in the FSD version, thus allowing its use on highways and city streets but with human supervision required. The responsible body, RDW, indicated that it has completed over 18 months of testing and analysis before granting the green light, emphasizing that correct use of the system can contribute positively to road safety. The Dutch adoption thus establishes a European first for Tesla and paves the way for possible broader recognition across the entire EU market.

Tesla, autonomous driving breakthrough in Europe
For Tesla, the approval is part of a growth strategy closely linked to the bet on autonomous driving. The company aims to make the large-scale adoption of full driverless driving a fundamental driver for its industrial and commercial plans. According to Elon Musk’s narrative, the AI-based software and the idea of robotaxis would represent one of the main sources of income, also due to the high valuation attributed to the group. Not surprisingly, FSD is not only considered a “futuristic” technology, but also a tool to revive demand. In Europe, sales have suffered due to a range perceived as less competitive and turbulence related to Musk’s politics and communication.

Approval arrives in the Netherlands
The Dutch approval comes at a time when Tesla is seeking to strengthen its commercial position. In February, sales in Europe increased for the first time in over a year, and several analysts expect an improvement in the following months thanks to consumer enthusiasm for the FSD functionality. Furthermore, RDW has announced its intention to submit the application for system authorization at the EU level as well, where member states will vote in a competent committee and European validity will depend on obtaining a majority. In case contrary, the possibility for individual countries to decide autonomously would still remain.
