Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK’s plant in Burnaston is home to Europe’s first Toyota Circular Factory. The Japanese company announced it: in fact, the factory recovers aluminum from alloy wheels to reuse it in engine production, thus supporting Corolla production at the British facility. And it does this through the exploration of new processes and opportunities aimed at maximizing the recovery, recycling and reuse of parts and materials from end-of-life vehicles.

Europe’s first Toyota Circular Factory
In particular, Toyota reports that its first European Circular Factory gathers information for the design of future models enabling simpler refurbishment as well as more efficient disposal at end of life. The processes, explains the Japanese company, follow the same methodologies of the Toyota Production System that have transformed production efficiency globally. At the same time, the circular approach supports the company’s strategy to achieve global carbon neutrality of its products and manufacturing processes.
Sustainable approach
The first vehicle to benefit from this circular process came off the production line on March 19. And we’re just getting started: following the launch of the first TCF at TMUK in Burnaston in the summer of last year, Toyota has already announced a second location in Europe at the Wałbrzych plant of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland, describing it as “the next step in building a European network of circular production systems with the potential to go beyond the company’s current activities and contribute to the sustainability of the entire manufacturing ecosystem”.
