Waymo will begin testing its autonomous vehicles in Munich in the coming weeks. This was announced by the autonomous driving technology company itself, explaining that with this step it aims to lay the foundations for a commercial passenger transport service in Germany that aims to launch towards the end of 2027. Initially, the vehicles will be manually driven in Munich to map the local roads and tested with autonomous driving specialists at the wheel.
Waymo accelerates in autonomous driving
But this is only the first step: the company, owned by Alphabet, stated that the testing period will help its autonomous driving system adapt to the driving conditions of Munich before the start of commercial operations. Waymo in this regard has declared that it is already in contact with all the local, state, and federal authorities necessary to obtain the valid authorizations to offer its service in Germany. The company also stated that it intends to invest in local fleet operations and create highly qualified jobs in view of the launch in the Bavarian city.
New tests in Munich
With this operation, Waymo intends to keep pace with its rivals. Indeed, we recall that Uber, Verne, and Pony.ai launched autonomous driving services in Zagreb last week, making the Croatian capital the first European city where users can book an autonomous vehicle through the Uber app. Earlier this year, Reuters reported, Waymo raised 16 billion dollars with a valuation of 126 billion dollars, as part of the expansion of its robotaxi service.
