In 2024 General Motors signed a joint venture agreement with Samsung SDI for the construction of a battery production plant, partly leveraging President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. Specifically, the agreement provided for the construction of a new facility in Indiana, at a cost of about 3.5 billion dollars. The plant was to be GM’s fourth site dedicated to battery production in the USA, alongside the plants in Ohio, Tennessee, and Michigan.

GM exits JV with Samsung SDI in Indiana
Two years later, the American giant has decided to withdraw from this agreement. Carscoops reports that recently Samsung SDI purchased the 49.99% stake held by GM in the joint venture, which means it will now fully own the plant in Indiana. The company cited the lower-than-expected growth in electric vehicle demand as the reason for the move. Consequently, this will become the first battery production plant independently operated by Samsung SDI in North America.
But the battery project continues
It is unknown how much Samsung paid to acquire GM’s stake in the partnership. Just as Ford did at one of its battery plants in the USA, Samsung will initially use the production capacity of the Indiana site to produce batteries for energy storage systems. Speaking of projects, the site was supposed to produce prismatic cells for GM’s future electric vehicles. This project still seems to be planned: Samsung SDI has indeed confirmed the collaboration with the American company for the joint development of a new generation prismatic battery cell for electric vehicles. It also stated that the Indiana plant could potentially start producing these batteries for GM in the future.
