Ferrari, a long walk in the desert
It would be easy to answer “a car“. We will try to make a deeper analysis of all the elements necessary to create a winning single-seater. We will ask ourselves: what is missing from this Ferrari to break that endless world title drought?
19 years since the last drivers’ title, 18 since the constructors’. The red car had never gone through such a long period without titles – considering both – because between the constructors’ titles of 1983 and 1999 there were 16 years.

FormulaPassion.it wanted to ask Pino Allievi (prestigious motorsport writer and contributor to our publication) and Francesco Cigarini (in Maranello for over 20 years and present on Instagram and YouTube), who experienced the Schumacher and Raikkonen/Massa era respectively as a journalist and as a team member: which characteristics of those winning Ferraris – technically, politically, emotionally – seem to be most lacking in the current one?
Pino Allievi: “Elkann and Vigna should provide answers”
“The Ferrari of the Montezemolo era was based on moving the best of the world champion Benetton to Maranello, with the skillful addition of Jean Todt. A group that worked on the individual, great abilities of each member, united by a policy (also) of terror, because Todt forgave nothing. Todt lived in Maranello day and night, sacrificed a part of his life to achieve what was a miracle, but above all he made the cultural effort to enter the Italian mentality.
I am not able to say if Vasseur did the same and certainly his group of technicians lacks the stability and cohesion of what existed in the times of Schumi, Raikkonen, Massa. Why is that? Because in four years nothing has changed? Is it a matter of people or management? It is up to John Elkann and Benedetto Vigna to give – and maybe express – some answers, since they were the ones who made, or endorsed, certain choices.”
Francesco Cigarini: “Why not contact those who made Ferrari great in the 2000s?”
“The times being compared are not similar but the ingredients that lead to victory are basically the same.
There must be a desire to win, to put oneself at the service of Ferrari’s history and culture, not just thinking of being Ferrari because you wear red, but putting yourself at disposal to feed the myth.
Humility, great desire, sacrifice, a strong and united technical direction, men with high skills in the right places.
Then, maybe all the ingredients are there inside, but if you place the pieces in an ineffective way and relegate skills, or do not give voice to ideas and willingness to act, everything blocks and the desire to expose oneself diminishes.
I would also propose a comparison with the people who made Ferrari great in the 2000s, but from what I have noticed there is no willingness to do so. Although I think there could be full availability, starting from President Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo.”
