The global geopolitical situation, with the recent attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran and the response of the Islamic Republic against all the countries of the Persian Gulf, is entering a collision course with the golden world of Formula 1. The regular holding of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs, scheduled for April 12 and 19, is inevitably subject to the developments of this new war that broke out last Saturday.

The issue also reached Melbourne and in the press conference a question in this regard was addressed to George Russell, who in addition to being the lead driver for the Mercedes team is also president of the drivers’ association, the GPDA, and therefore has a significant representative role within the paddock. The Briton, however, did not want to take an explicit position on whether or not he wanted to race in these countries, relying on the decisions that the federation and F1 will make.

“I think we all have faith in F1 and the FIA to make the right decision and I am sure the situation will change from day to day. But there are still four or five weeks to go, so I don’t think anyone is really pushing on these questions because there is still a lot of time between now and then – Russell concluded – and obviously it is something that is beyond our control. So we trust that the leadership will make the right decision. And if not, I’m sure there are plan Bs, but we’re not asking for them and we trust they’re working on it“.
