Volvo EX60, how is the new-era electric SUV

With the EX60, Volvo enters a new electric era. And there are several reasons. One above all: it is the first car from the Swedish manufacturer to be built on the SPA3, the third generation of the brand’s scalable platform. The EX60 is a medium-sized SUV, clearly 100% electric. It is the battery-powered counterpart to the XC60, the company’s best-selling model globally. Some numbers to immediately frame the competitiveness of this car: 800 Volt technology, 810 km of maximum range, from 10 to 80% charge in 19′ and half the time to put 340 km of range into the battery.

The new Volvo EX60

Electric means sustainability. But sustainability doesn’t just mean electric. It also means zeroing or attempting to zero CO2 emissions along the entire production chain. Some examples: the EX60 boasts the lowest CO2 footprint compared to any other Volvo and on par with the smaller EX30. Not only that: it brings with it the highest percentage of recycled materials, 27%, compared to any other model of the brand. And again: the Swedish company has adopted the mega-casting construction process and cell-to-body technology, which guarantees a certain weight saving in addition to an increase in energy density and charging speed.

Technology and connectivity

Even in terms of connectivity, Volvo has not held back. The new EX60 is indeed the Swedish company’s smartest car ever. Thanks to the HuginCore core computing system, which is capable of performing up to 250 trillion operations per second. How does it work? Very simply: it processes data from on-board sensors and thus understands the driving context, thereby maximizing the driving experience also in terms of safety. Speaking of safety: a special mention for the first multi-adaptive seat belt, which uses AI to autonomously adapt to traffic conditions and to the user.

Design and interiors

If the exterior design is immediately recognizable, internally the new EX60 has been designed based on different environments, which Volvo calls “rooms”. Elegance that rhymes with technology: the cabin is indeed characterized by a new 11.4″ driver display and a new 15.04″ horizontal central screen. Artificial intelligence is also a protagonist in this sense: the new EX60 is indeed the first Volvo to be launched with Google Gemini, which responds to (almost) every request from those on board the car.

Range and powertrains

The Volvo EX60 range is based on Plus and Ultra trims and three powertrains. At the base, we find the P6 with 374 hp and 611 km of range, guaranteed by an 83 kWh battery. The 22 kW AC charging combines with 320 kW DC, with the possibility of going from 10 to 80% in 16 minutes and restoring 300 km of range in 10 minutes. Then we find the P10 AWD, which increases power to 510 hp and the maximum range to 660 km. Thanks to a larger 95 kWh battery. DC charging is 370 kW, which means that in 10 minutes, 315 km of range can be added to the battery. At the top there is the P12 AWD, with a power output of up to 680 hp. The range also takes a significant leap forward, rising to 810 km, thanks to a battery that reaches 117 kWh of capacity. In this case, the 10-80% charge takes 19′, while the restorable range in 10 minutes increases to 340 km.

How it drives on the road

We tested the new Volvo EX60 starting from Bologna and reaching Marina Romea, on a mixed route including highway, long-distance roads, and urban streets, in many cases uneven and with irregular surfaces. A perfect mix to verify the behavior of this electric SUV, which measures less than 2 meters in width and over 4.8 meters in length, with a total weight of approximately 2.5 tons. A strong point of this car is certainly the driving silence, thanks mainly to extensive soundproofing work carried out by the company.

The suspension comfort is high, the adaptive suspension helps a lot in this regard, with three settings available for the shock absorbers. The SUV’s road behavior is stable, with the ability to absorb all road imperfections. Also noteworthy is the optimal visibility, both front and rear. It’s difficult to talk about consumption in a first contact of this type, however, Volvo declares just over 17 kWh per 100 kilometers (P10 version with 510 hp). Good trunk capacity: it ranges from 634 liters as standard to 1,647 liters with the seats folded down, plus 58 liters in the front frunk. Final word on prices: the range starts from 65,350 euros for the P6 version and goes up to 81,450 euros for the P12 AWD. Prices are in line with the plug-in hybrid XC60 counterpart: this way Volvo allows its customers to choose based on technology and no longer based on the price list.
