With the new ES90, Volvo takes a clear leap forward in its electrification journey. It is not just a 100% electric sedan built on the SPA2 platform, nor just the second “software defined” Volvo based on the Superset stack. The real distinguishing element is the introduction of 800-volt technology, an absolute first for the Swedish brand. This detail is not purely technical: it is the cornerstone that improves efficiency, charging times, and range, and redefines the daily user experience of the car.

Volvo ES90 on the road test
From a practical point of view, the numbers speak for themselves. The all-wheel-drive variants with dual motors and a 106 kWh battery promise over 700 km of range on a single charge and up to 275 km of added range in just 10 minutes of ultrafast charging. At 350 kW charging stations, the battery can go from 10% to 80% in about 22 minutes: data showing how the 800V architecture maintains high charging power and reduces downtime, regardless of the power available at the station.
Ultra-fast charging
We were able to see these benefits firsthand by driving the single-motor version with a 92 kWh battery. The specifications of this configuration are slightly lower than the top-of-the-range variants, but no less convincing. Same declared 10-80% interval, 260 km of added range in 10 minutes of ultrafast charging, and a maximum range of 651 km. In our road test conducted from Bologna to Fiumana, but especially during charging, we found values very similar to the estimates: in 10 minutes, starting from 17% and 65 km of range, we reached 52% with an estimated 230 km. Crucial in this context was the battery preconditioning, which allows the maximum charging power to be reached quickly and can also be activated manually for those who know they will be stopping soon.

Range and prices
In addition to the battery and charging times, the ES90 introduces further features designed for practicality. The car is ready for bidirectional charging and supports the Plug and Charge function, which simplifies and speeds up interaction with charging stations by eliminating administrative steps and downtime at the charging point. Regarding engines, the range spans from a single-motor version with 333 hp and 480 Nm (0-100 km/h in 6,6 seconds) to two dual-motor versions with 456 hp and 680 hp, with respective torques of 670 and 870 Nm. The Performance version then reaches 100 km/h in 4,0 seconds flat. The declared prices start from 73.500 euros for the entry-level up to 96.570 euros for the Performance.

Top-tier aerodynamics and computing power
The ES90 is not just propulsion technology: it is also build quality and design language. The bodywork recalls the elegance of classic sedans, blending it with coupé accents and SUV references, while aerodynamic efficiency is at the top of its class with a coefficient of 0,25. On board, the cargo capacity reaches up to 1.427 liters, and the electronic package utilizes the most powerful computing system ever adopted by Volvo, confirming the “software defined” approach that puts new functions at the center of the customer experience.

Safety always a priority
Finally, the ES90 confirms the centrality of the safety theme, which has always been a Volvo trademark. The advanced package includes seven cameras, five radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors working in synergy to offer a vision “beyond human reach,” as the Swedish company itself defines it. The result is a sedan that combines driving comfort, range, and fast charging thanks to 800V, with technological and safety equipment designed to raise the level of the entire electric category.
