Floury preferred not to risk
The 2026 WEC World Championship opened with the success of Toyota in the 6 Hours of Imola ahead of Ferrari. The TR010, the new Hypercar from the Japanese manufacturer, proved very effective in managing tires and fuel, aspects that, according to Ferrari, currently make Toyota the best car on the grid.
In Imola, Toyota placed both cars on the podium in first and third position, and at one point in the race, #8 and #7 were even in first and second position. Kamui Kobayashi, driver of #7 and Toyota team principal, would have even wanted to take a risk to try and achieve a one-two finish, but the technical director David Floury did not want to compromise an already excellent result.

“Kobayashi was pushing over the radio not to change tires and try to maintain second position, but it was too risky – said Floury as reported by the publication sportscar365.com – if it had been the last race of the championship and the World Championship victory was at stake, it was a scenario that could have been considered, but in this case, the game wasn’t worth the candle.”
