We reported in recent days how Tesla intends to promote the new Cybercab in Austin, Texas, for some autonomous test drives. Now, the same two-seater vehicle from the American company designed to be without a steering wheel or pedals is in the spotlight. Ansa reports that the Trump administration has opened an investigation into Elon Musk’s Cybercab, after the NHTSA reported that Tesla would have self-certified its autonomous cars as compliant with applicable federal safety standards.
Tesla Cybercab under investigation
The same association intends to examine the technical data on which Tesla certified the Cybercab. This is because, as we well know, the vehicle in question does not have conventional manual controls permanently installed, such as brake and accelerator pedals and the steering wheel. Ansa also reports that autonomous car manufacturers can ask American authorities to launch vehicles on the market without some requirements. But this is not the case for Tesla, which preferred to rely on a sort of self-certification on the more traditional parameters.
Issue of self-certification
As mentioned, in recent days Tesla announced the offer of test drives in limited areas of Austin aboard its Cybercab. The initiative, according to Reuters, was welcomed with attention both by enthusiasts and investors. Not only that: in the previous weeks, the same company would have promoted a supposed launch event of the car in Texas. According to collected testimonies and released videos, the event attracted a considerable influx of participants, some of whom came to Texas to try the golden cars with butterfly-opening doors. According to reports, Musk would have even skipped the meeting.
