Skoda Superb is preparing to leave the market. It will not be an “all at once” but rather a gradual withdrawal for a model that over the years has become known and appreciated. But it was not enough: the sharp decline in demand for sedans and station wagons goes hand in hand with the massive reduction of the VW Group’s range. Translated: for Skoda Superb, evidently, there will soon be no place.

Skoda Superb under discussion
Its gap in the range will be filled with a new model derived from the Vision O concept, which anticipates the next generation of electric Octavia. Its arrival is expected by the end of the decade based on the new SSP platform of the VW Group, which will also be used for the new Volkswagen Golf. In particular, the Vision O is positioned between the current Octavia and the Superb in terms of size. We recall that the first debut of Octavia dates back 30 years, while the larger Superb debuted in 2001. In both cases, Skoda has reached the fourth generation.
New platform, fewer complications
As mentioned, the Volkswagen Group is launching an important cost reduction program, aiming to reduce by about 50% the number of models offered by its various brands by 2035. In this context, however, Skoda is one of the most profitable brands of the Group, with record sales and profits in the first half of this year and profit margins around 8.5%. “The ultimate goal is electric, no doubt. But we still have to find out if the transition will happen naturally by 2035″, explained Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Skoda.

Sedans and station wagons declining
Autocar reports that when asked if Skoda’s success means that some models will not be eliminated from the range, Zellmer replied that “it is not certain“. The Czech company’s number hinted that the reduction of the line-up could concern sedans and station wagons. “We are very proud of the Superb and we love the Octavia. The new generation SSP platform allows us to reach the size of the Superb. We are evaluating whether it is still necessary to bet everything on a complete offer or if there is a smart solution to cover both segments”, he specified.
