Mitsubishi officially enters the humanoid robot race with a strategic agreement signed with Highlanders, a start-up born from the University of Tokyo. The agreement, formalized in July by the two companies, aims to develop and mass-produce machines equipped with artificial intelligence, leveraging the technological drive of the academic team and the deep industrial experience of the Japanese automotive group. The goal is to intercept the growing demand for automation in sectors currently suffering from labor shortages, transforming engineering expertise into more efficient and replicable robotic solutions at a production level.
Mitsubishi focuses on humanoid robots
In the outlined industrial plan, Mitsubishi aims to achieve a rate of 1,000 units per month by the end of 2027. To reach this goal, the planned approach is not limited to theoretical research and development: the company intends to insert the prototypes directly into processes, to validate the performance of AI systems dedicated to automotive production in the field. The ambition is to create specialized robots that can be integrated into existing plants, making automation not only futuristic but also concretely implementable in the factory, in a context where various international players – including Chinese and US giants – are accelerating in the same segment.
Strategic agreement with Highlanders
The first installations will take place at the Kyoto plant: Mitsubishi and Highlanders plan to initiate the arrival of the first prototypes on the engine assembly line there. In this initial phase, the Japanese company will collect the necessary data to refine the artificial intelligence systems, and will progressively evaluate the concrete uses of the robots by monitoring their performance under real operating conditions. For its part, Highlanders – which produces versatile robots with entirely made-in-Japan components – declares its intention to bridge the country’s technological gap in the field of “physical AI”, meaning the integration between robotics and artificial intelligence, aiming to make innovation suitable for contemporary industrial production.
