Mercedes-Benz is bringing back the G-Class Cabriolet almost ten years after the production of the last convertible version of the extreme off-roader ended. The renewed interest is sparked by some new images taken by Autocar that clearly show the new variant with the folded fabric soft top. A detail that, on the bodywork, translates into a dedicated transverse space, occupying the space usually reserved for the trunk of the standard G-Class. A return that aims to combine the iconic “box” design of the model with the pleasure of the wind on board. But that maintains the most recognizable identity of the G.

Is the Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet coming back?
The images also reveal the presence of a possible sporty AMG version, recognizable by the side exhaust pipes. And the implicit reference is to the AMG G63. With a standard body and a 580 hp twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, the model promises a decidedly extreme mix of performance and open-air nature, consistent with the traditionally more muscular setup of the AMG family. At the moment, however, the Star brand has not yet provided official technical details on the new Cabriolet, leaving room for speculation about engines, chassis, and further differences compared to the platform currently on the market.
Open-air history and tradition
No launch date has been announced. But since the Cabriolet is already in testing and is a variant of a model currently sold, a debut in the coming months is plausible. As for the price, a significant increase compared to the current range is expected. The link between the G-Class and convertible versions is not new. The first Cabriolet was born in 1979 with a two-door short wheelbase (produced until 2013). While in 2017, the Maybach G650 Landaulet caused a stir, a four-door ultra-luxury model, presented with a 6.0-liter 621 hp V12 biturbo and built in 99 units, all equipped with a front hardtop and a folding rear section.
