McLaren: the new wing is in doubt, but there are other updates

Andrea Stella had promised a completely new McLaren between Miami and Montreal and he kept his word. In Canada on the MCL40 arrives the second part of the first evolutionary package, renewing itself especially in the floor, the hood, and the front wing. It is precisely the wing that caused some too many troubles in the only free practice session, pushing the team to shelve the update, at least for now.

Doubts about the front wing

The most striking novelty on the MCL40 in Montreal is the front wing, deeply revised compared to the launch version. The profiles follow a completely different trend, especially regarding the upper elements, testimony of a new setting of the flows directed towards the rest of the car. On the new version, moreover, the movable flaps extend up to the endplate partitions, maximizing the reduction of drag on the straights.

McLaren tested the novelty in the only free practice session, but found its performance below expectations. For the Sprint qualifying, the Woking team thus decided to return to the previous configuration, but it is too early to talk about a definitive rejection, as emerges from Norris’s comments regarding the update package: “It seemed good, but some things were perhaps a bit questionable and probably some time is needed to reanalyze, especially considering that it is a very atypical circuit. The grip is very low and you bounce between the curbs, which is why you don’t have a fully representative picture and it is difficult to correlate with the wind tunnel. For some parts we need a bit more time and we will probably reintroduce them next weekend or in Barcelona.”

During the free practice session, moreover, Oscar Piastri locked the brakes several times, with the team suggesting the Australian to manually anticipate the closing of the front wing compared to the braking point. It is difficult to say if this problem also arises from the new front wing, but what is certain is that its shelving limits the effectiveness of the other novelties. McLaren in fact developed its package organically, where every modification is designed to work in synergy with the others, including the new wing.

Other developments

In any case, the updates on the MCL40 are not limited to the front end. The world champions have also refined the flow conduits in the floor entry section, whose philosophy had changed with the Miami package, taking inspiration from Ferrari’s. McLaren tweaked the shape of the five vertical elements, also aligning the bridge structures placed between the various partitions, all with the aim of improving the quality and energy of the flow under the floor.

Another significant novelty is the hood, where two lateral openings appear for the evacuation of hot air. The world champions were thus able to narrow the outlet at the rear of the car, limiting the amount of heat expelled to the rear, all to the benefit of aerodynamic cleanliness and diffuser performance. In the same area, the team tweaked the fairings of the rear suspension arms and their coupling with the bodywork, favoring the flow along the sides of the gearbox.

The Woking team also tweaked the rear wing, already updated on the occasion of the Miami round. This time the endplate partition changes, on whose outer surface the vein that diverts the flows upwards has been enlarged. Finally, in the cockpit area, a flap appears on the halo crown, a solution already widespread on ground effect cars.

The difficulties of Canada

Looking at the gap suffered by the Mercedes on Friday in Canada, one might think that the updates were not enough to allow McLaren to keep pace with the Silver Arrows. However, it must be taken into account that Montreal is not a friendly track for Woking cars, transmitting little energy to the tires and limiting the MCL40’s ability to manage overheating and degradation. The starting setup for the weekend, moreover, was far from optimal and forced the team to take action for the Sprint qualifying. It is therefore too early to despair in Woking, even if no further uncertainties in development will be allowed to keep world championship hopes alive.
