Lotus will also offer a V6 version of its new Esprit supercar, in addition to the already confirmed V8 hybrid version. This was announced by the British car manufacturer itself, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the lightweight philosophy that distinguishes it. In particular, the company has set a target weight of 1.5 tons for the V8 version of the car, code-named Type 135, whose launch is scheduled for 2028. This was recently communicated by CEO Feng Qingfeng to investors during the second quarter results conference call.

Lotus prepares an Esprit V6
Lotus had already announced that the successor to the Emira sports car would use a V6 hybrid system, but this is the first confirmation that the same powertrain will also be used on the flagship “Esprit,” creating a lighter model with a more accessible entry price. Evidently, keeping the weight low in a complex electrified transmission is not simple. “Achieving this goal with an 800 Volt architecture, a hybrid system, a V8 engine and an electric motor is not easy,” admitted Feng.
Reduced weight, high challenge
For this reason, the company has considered an ultralight electric motor as a solution. Feng spoke of a typical motor of about 200 HP that normally weighs between 75 and 95 kg, but in this case uses Formula 1 technology to reduce its mass to only 20 kg. The car’s system power will exceed 1,000 HP. Furthermore, the car will be equipped with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission designed to handle high torque while keeping weight to a minimum. The new supercar will be produced alongside the Emira sports car at Hethel, giving a boost to the historic Lotus plant in Norfolk.
