Liberty Media starts off on the right foot in MotoGP
The numbers show that MotoGP in the first three months of 2026 recorded a +25% increase in revenue, reaching 94 million dollars, with an operating loss of 24 million dollars and an adjusted OIBDA increased by 60%. Derek Chang, president and CEO of Liberty Media, emphasized the company’s enthusiasm “for the significant opportunities to expand the commercial reach of MotoGP over time.”
The goal is clear, to increase the global following of the Motorcycle World Championship and especially in the United States. Chang explained: “We are beginning to expand the ecosystem around MotoGP with initiatives like the Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup. The US GP on Fox reached an average audience of 500 thousand viewers, a 16% increase in followers on social media in the US since January 2025.”
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP, continued: “In this start of the championship we have already seen 7 riders from 5 different teams on the podium. We welcomed over 720 thousand spectators in our first 4 races, including the record of 228 thousand at Buriram. Video views on our platforms increased by 40% compared to 2025, not counting the Video Pass.”
The future MotoGP calendar: will there be Miami?
Derek Chang, president and CEO of Liberty Media, was asked about the possibility of a race in Miami. The manager did not commit, but hinted that it could happen: “We have already said and will continue to repeat that the United States represents an important market for MotoGP and we are exploring all avenues to grow our business here. It will take time, but there is interest and the way we will do it will clearly be to add races in the United States. Miami would seem a logical place, because there is already a circuit. There are many things to define, for Miami or any other track, because we have to think in terms of feasibility and safety, as well as commercial opportunities. We will have these conversations with Miami and other locations, to identify the most suitable for expansion in the US.”
And on the suggestion of city races, Chang confirmed: “Our goal is to bring some races closer to cities, so that we can take advantage of infrastructure, airports and transport, hotels, restaurants and other things to have easier access to. And we have already taken this direction with the two new additions of Buenos Aires and Adelaide. However, we will not overhaul the calendar, we have a long tradition of races and many iconic locations that we want to maintain. But they could be improved”, Chang concluded.
