The Mercedes customer case

On the sidelines of the Australian Grand Prix weekend, Andrea Stella of McLaren and James Vowles of Williams were asked why their teams were so far from Mercedes, despite having the same power unit.
Vowles remained vague: “What Mercedes does with the power unit caught us a bit by surprise. They are fair with the customer teams and I am sure we have access to everything they have access to. It’s just a matter of understanding how to do certain things.”
Stella was more polemical: “The discussion with HPP on the opportunity to have more information has been going on for weeks. This is not how you work in Formula 1″.
Toto Wolff of Mercedes had nipped any speculation in the bud: It is not possible to satisfy everyone. When there is a rule change, there is a lot to learn“.

Ferrari, on the other hand…

On the side of the Ferrari-powered teams, it was Oliver Bearman of Haas who explained in China that Maranello’s availability was instead total: “I have to say that Ferrari has been incredibly open and helpful with us in terms of energy delivery strategy and giving us as much information as possible to help us. I believe the situation with Ferrari is different compared to that between McLaren and Mercedes”.
