While trying to beat Charles Leclerc’s time with a record in T2, Hamilton overdoes the braking at turn 22 and, despite locking up, fails to avoid the wall.
Hamilton then puts the car in reverse and restarts with the front wing stuck under the wheels: after numerous insistences from the team and race engineer Carlo Santi, to avoid penalties or fines, the Englishman parks the SF-26.
The third free practice session thus ends here for the seven-time world champion, who will now go into Qualifying with fewer references compared to Mercedes and Leclerc.
Hamilton’s mistake causes a long interruption of the third free practice session for the repair of the TecPro barriers, resulting in lost time for all 22 drivers.
