F1 Monza, Qualifying Report

Amid the Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren, the name you don’t expect pops up in Monza Qualifying: Pierre Gasly. The Frenchman, who achieved his only career win at the Autodromo in 2020, also erases the zero in the pole position column, starting last in the final time attack of Q3 and incredibly beating all the much more favored rivals. A fantasist’s move for number 10, who knows how to shine here and proves it once again: he is the first Frenchman on pole in F1 since Jean Alesi, who in 1997 started ahead of everyone right here in Monza.

The big favorite – George Russell – is bitterly disappointed being beaten by six hundredths, but remains in a great position for the GP. Third place for Oscar Piastri, who will probably be penalized for an impeding against Liam Lawson. It’s not really the Australian’s season, as he is sacrificed to give a slipstream to Lando Norris which then proves useless (the world champion starts eighth). The main beneficiary would be Ferrari, placing Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton respectively in P4 and P5.

Due to a battery problem admitted by Frederic Vasseur, the Scuderia risks a shocking elimination in Q2, with Gabriel Bortoleto just one thousandth off the Englishman’s reference and seven thousandths from the Monegasque’s. Both advance to Q3 but don’t have the pace to fight for pole: with a race pace superior to Gasly’s and the possible penalty for Piastri, Ferrari can still approach the GP with the prospect of being close to Russell and pressuring him with two drivers, while knowing that Mercedes remains clearly superior in top speed.

At the same level as Ferrari is Max Verstappen, who lacks Lawson’s help in Q3 (the New Zealander is eliminated at the second cut) and doesn’t find Kimi Antonelli’s slipstream at the decisive moment. In fact, it is Super Max who unintentionally provides the tow to Russell in a lap that still doesn’t earn the latter the pole. Completing the top 10 are Colapinto, a disappointing Norris, and the always positive Lindblad and Bortoleto, who move up one position due to Antonelli’s demotion. Kimi will have to fight back from 20th position, with an explosive and very fresh engine. Tomorrow the Bolognese is ready to put on a show.
