F1 Monza, the GP report

If a few years ago someone had told us that an Italian driver would win the Monza GP from 19th place, beating the competition, we would have thought it was a joke: instead, it’s all true, there is an alien on the track, he is one of us and his name is Kimi Antonelli. With a stunning performance, the championship leader signs a feat that will remain in the legend of Italian motorsport, coming back from the back of the grid and triumphing at the Autodromo. He is the first Italian to do so 60 years after Ludovico Scarfiotti’s victory. A magical afternoon, with Nel blu, dipinto di blu playing in the background to welcome this young man who is giving substance to the tricolor dreams.

Antonelli builds his victory already in the first meters thanks to a perfect start on hard tires. On the seventh lap, after the restart due to Charles Leclerc’s initial accident, he is already sixth: one after another fall Oscar Piastri, Pierre Gasly, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, while on the 18th lap Antonelli also overtakes George Russell leading the GP. Here begins a series of laps full of battles with the teammate that favor Verstappen himself until Mercedes decides to freeze the positions with the Brit ahead of the Bolognese. And so, Antonelli stops under Virtual Safety Car fitting a new set of medium tires, reaching his teammate at the end of the race: after a failed first attempt with a gravel excursion at the Prima Variante, Antonelli lands the knockout blow at Ascari, three laps from the end, sending the fans into delirium.

It is a victory worth much more than 25 points and a +66 in the World Championship: it is a stamp on a season that saw Antonelli triumph on the most iconic tracks of the calendar (Suzuka, Spa, Monaco, Monza, he probably would have won also at Silverstone if his Mercedes hadn’t betrayed him), it is the most special signature on this generation of cars in which the blue shines like no other.

However, this all-Italian celebration is missing the most awaited guest. The Ferrari, in fact, throws itself away already in turn 1, with Leclerc pushing Lewis Hamilton into the gravel at the Prima Variante. Not “satisfied”, the Monegasque suffers the overtake from Max Verstappen and, to defend himself from Oscar Piastri, loses control of the SF-26 at Alboreto, ending his GP after two laps. For Sir Lewis, the second Monza as a Ferrari driver starts uphill thanks to the teammate’s door-slam, but it must be noted that Ferrari never shows the pace of the best. Even with a “clean” race it would have been difficult to defend from the Mercedes and Verstappen. A P6 arrives that represents crumbs compared to what was hoped for (and promised to the fans) since Wednesday. A disaster that will surely leave repercussions within the team starting from Madrid, with Hamilton wanting the captain’s role after what happened today.

On the podium go Russell and Verstappen with two opposite moods: crushed the Mercedes driver (beaten in qualifying by an Alpine and in the race by an Antonelli who started 19th), proud Super Max, who redeems himself after the Zandvoort accident.

Points for the Alpine (with Pierre Gasly seventh after a predictable “crab GP” from pole) and the Racing Bulls. Yuki Tsunoda, however, risks losing the first point in two GPs for an infraction in the second start. Aston Martin returns to the abyss, closing the GP with two close retirements due to technical problems.
