GP Canada, sensational: Russell retires due to a technical problem

The W17 #63 shuts down. And Antonelli dreams

After an epic duel between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, which reminded many fans of the 2014 Bahrain battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, the twist that could decide the Canadian GP and perhaps give a first real direction to the World Championship race came during the 31st lap. Russell’s W17 #63 literally shut down due to an obvious technical problem that forced the Brit first to a long run on the grass cutting the chicane at turn 8 and then to sadly park his car at the side of the track.

The Englishman was furious in the cockpit, showing all his frustration over an incident that – it is clear – could have a significant impact on the title race, even though we are only at the fifth GP of the year. It must be said that the on-track battle between him and Antonelli had been truly stellar until that moment, on the edge of the regulations, and the Italian seemed to be faster than his rival. Just before mid-race, however, we were deprived of the chance to see what the outcome of this splendid duel would have been. On Antonelli’s side, though, if victory comes, there could be plenty to smile about: in case of success, the Italian would fly to +43 in the championship over Russell.
