F1 Spa, the Free Practice 2 report
It was all too good this morning, for the competition, to be true. And indeed it was not true. Mercedes corrects the morning’s misjudgment, adds more aerodynamic load to the W17 and returns to the top at Spa-Francorchamps: it does so, and by now it is no longer a novelty, with Kimi Antonelli; the Bolognese gets the best time of the second free practice session in 1:45.944, a time two tenths better than Lando Norris’s. What surprises, even more than other times, is the gap with George Russell (8th), which is 1.2 seconds. The Brit complains of a very slippery rear and suboptimal tire warm-up, but the gap remains huge and forces him into another chasing weekend.
Norris is the only one who manages to contain the gap from Antonelli, for the rest very marked gaps also due to the length of the track: third position for Max Verstappen at half a second, P4 for Lewis Hamilton at seven tenths. Only 11th, however, Charles Leclerc, who is denied the time attack but would have been behind his teammate anyway: at Maranello, Sir Lewis starts the weekend better both on the single lap and on race pace; too bad that Pierre Gasly‘s accident at the end of FP2 deprives us of interesting references on the long runs of the Ferrari drivers (while Antonelli’s excellent feedback against Russell is confirmed).
Top-5 for Isack Hadjar ahead of Oscar Piastri and Franco Colapinto, still among the top ten the two drivers of Racing Bulls (Arvid Lindblad ahead of Liam Lawson as in the morning). At the back, still very bad for Aston Martin, 1.5 seconds behind Cadillac.
