After about seven months, the jointly owned plant of General Motors and LG Energy Solution in northeast Ohio is expected to resume battery cell production. Reuters reports this, citing next week as the likely period for the restart of operations. Seven months is not a short time, but on the other hand, the American giant had no alternatives: the drop in consumer demand for electric vehicles was too significant to think about continuing regularly.

GM resumes battery production in Ohio
But the situation has changed today. In fact, on Monday most of the laid-off workers will resume producing batteries at the joint venture plant Ultium Cells. This was notified by Tom Gallagher, Vice President of Operations at Ultium: overall, 1,400 people will return to work at the plant. The other joint venture plant between GM and LG, in Tennessee, now produces batteries for energy storage systems instead of batteries for electric vehicles.
Meanwhile in Indiana…
As for the plant in Indiana, we told you yesterday that Samsung SDI has purchased the 49.99% stake held by GM in the joint venture, which means it will now fully own the production facility. The company cited lower-than-expected growth in electric vehicle demand as the reason for the move. Consequently, this will become the first battery production plant independently operated by Samsung SDI in North America. It is not known how much Samsung paid to acquire GM’s stake in the partnership.
