Electric car market, Polestar analyzes the growth

In April, the European market for fully electric cars continues to grow decisively. According to data processed by the European Alternative Fuels Observatory, 201,986 full electric cars were registered in the 16 main monitored markets, with a 34.1% year-on-year increase. The result is an ever greater share of total new registrations, reaching 22.5%. A clear sign, according to Polestar, of the progressive stabilization of demand towards electric vehicles.

Electric car market: Europe grows

Looking at the overall trend, since the beginning of the year BEV registrations have exceeded 740,000 units. This progress also helps reduce European energy dependence: the spread of BEVs translates into an estimated saving of almost 3 million barrels of oil every year. In other words, the market consolidates levels above one in five cars, aligning with the need to strengthen the continent’s energy security.

Italy accelerates. And Polestar…

In this expansion framework, Italy stands out as one of the fastest-growing markets in Europe, with registrations up 97.2% since the beginning of the year. Polestar also provides a concrete indicator of how the electric transition is accelerating: in the first quarter of 2026, global retail sales grew by 7% compared to the same period in 2025, while registrations in Italy recorded a +80%. “This growth shows how electric is not a future project but a reality already present and continuously evolving,” commented Elettra Benelli, Managing Director of Polestar Italy.
