Formula 1 is already looking ahead to the next technical cycle, which could start earlier than planned. As of today, the current regulations will remain in effect until 2030 inclusive, but it is not excluded that the next generation of cars could debut early. To achieve this, FIA, Formula 1, and teams will have to define the technical cornerstones of the new era by the end of the year, with the aim of simplifying the current formula.

The pillars of the new regulations
During a press conference to review the mid-season, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali also spoke about the future regulations. Their drafting will be mainly the responsibility of the Federation, although not exclusively: “There is no doubt that the final word on the next technical regulations belongs to the FIA, but we are also discussing together with manufacturers, teams, drivers, and fans.”
Domenicali then confirmed the previews of recent months, all pointing towards a generation of lighter cars with a less invasive electric component: “The main goal for future regulations is to keep things as simple as possible, to lead Formula 1 towards lighter cars, with sustainable fuels and some electrification, giving drivers the possibility to push as much as possible. This has always been something drivers have asked us for. Regarding the technicalities, I rely on the FIA to do the right things. I believe that by the end of this year we will be in a position to have a package ready to discuss.”

Timing
Drafting a draft of the new regulations by the end of 2026 would be crucial to try to anticipate the timing, without necessarily having to wait until 2031 to turn the page. Domenicali comments: “There are two options. If we waited for this technical cycle to end in 2031, there would be nothing to prevent the FIA from proposing a completely different regulation. Obviously, if the teams wanted to be part of it, they could, otherwise not. It’s an exaggeration, but the basic principle is understood.”
The Formula 1 CEO continues: “If instead there was an agreement on what to do to anticipate the timing, we need to find governance with the teams and manufacturers. This is another opportunity that will be on our table by the end of the year. As you can imagine, there is a lot [to discuss] and various fronts on which everyone pushes for different reasons, but I believe that by the end of the year we will be able to have the right package for the future.”
