Good news: the Italian government extends the cut on fuel excise duties. Bad news: the extension is only for one day. Ansa reports, explaining that in the summer exodus that takes a toll on motorists, the government has decided to extend until August 26 the discount on diesel. It was Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti who signed the decree on mobile excise duties that puts on the table over 20 million euros of extra VAT revenue, for a cut of 17 cents at the pump.

Extension of diesel excise cut…
Clearly, this is not enough. Ansa also reports that new measures are under government review, and as always, the pace will once again be dictated by the coverage. “The stopgap measures are no longer enough. We need to immediately tax the extra profits of energy companies. We must move from words to action“, attacked PD leader Elly Schlein, referring to the request to apply in Italy the line just signed with Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, and Poland to tax the major companies’ windfall profits.
…but only for one day
Meanwhile, according to data from the Ministry of Enterprises, diesel has also broken the psychological threshold of 2.2 euros, reaching an average of 2.203 euros per liter. As for gasoline, the situation is not much better, running at 2.087 euros. “A blow that weighs even more during the weekend of the big return, with the Anas Road Mobility Observatory estimating over 24 million movements,” Ansa concluded.
