Studying Aprilia
With a lightning lap achieved in the final phase of the Practice sessions, Fabio Di Giannantonio managed to record the second best time of the session – albeit four tenths behind Acosta – and secure direct access to Q2 for tomorrow. Friday at Balaton Park was a day full of work and complications for the Roman rider of the VR46 team. Work that, however, is not currently yielding the desired results.
“We have been busy trying to improve the bike – said Di Giannantonio at the end of the day to Sky Sport MotoGP microphones – we did a lot of tests. We’ve never had a day like this, apart from the tests. We are trying to improve the bike, to try to find that something extra to be closer to Aprilia, with all the things we have seen in these races. But unfortunately today everything we tried was worse. So at the very last minute we put our bike on and believed in it. We were also lucky because I only caught one yellow flag and did the lap. So we took a big risk, but we are trying, we are working and we continue to work. The gap to Acosta, however, is actually large”.
Continuing his analysis, Di Giannantonio also explained that he had tried to follow a path set at Mugello by Bagnaia. A solution that, however, does not seem to work for him: “Pecco tried a slightly different setup at Mugello and we also wanted to understand how the bike behaved here, but I didn’t like it. These are things you have to try because if you accidentally find something, you then carry it forward into other races. So, in my opinion, this is a positive attitude. At Ducati, we are really trying hard to find something and sometimes you take a small risk, which today, in the end, I can say was controlled. Balaton? In the end, it’s a different layout from the others. In my opinion, in the calendar we should have super-fast tracks like Mugello and others a bit slower like this one. The safety situation can be improved, but in the end, it’s fine to have a slightly slower layout too”.
