Ferrari, the first real disappointment of the year?
Ferrari started the 2026 season behind Mercedes, confident that the updates at the beginning of a new regulatory cycle could give them the chance to consistently fight for the top.
The first milestone was set in Miami, where team principal Frederic Vasseur had announced “a package and a half” of developments. But during the American weekend, the two reds of Leclerc and Hamilton stayed behind Mercedes, also behind McLaren and probably at the level of Red Bull, which made great progress thanks to the updates.
In short, not exactly what you could call the turning point of the season. Since the new engine with the ‘ADUO boost’ will not arrive before Spa, how will the next six races be managed?
Chandhok sinks Ferrari updates
On the sidelines of the Miami Grand Prix, former Formula 1 driver and current commentator for Sky UK Karun Chandhok was not kind to Vasseur’s men: “If this is Ferrari’s big update package for the first part of the season, then McLaren and Mercedes have nothing to worry about. Miami was supposed to be the weekend of the overtake, but instead I had the feeling that they slipped even further back. There should be some concern in Maranello and at Ferrari. They need to understand if there is further performance to optimize or unlock from this update, otherwise they will fall behind when McLaren brings more developments in Canada and Mercedes brings its big update package.”
