The State Administration for Market Regulation in China has ordered BMW to immediately recall nearly 180.000 vehicles due to a potential defect in the air conditioning system wiring. According to the AFP agency, the procedure affects 133.849 units of the 5 Series produced in China between December 2023 and April 2025 and another 45.678 imported BMWs. Among these, there are 8.978 5 Series, 36.527 7 Series and 173 M5, all manufactured between 2022 and 2025. The official notice indicates that the problem is due to incorrect positioning of the wiring in the front compartment.

Massive BMW recall in China
The defect emerges when, during routine maintenance such as air filter replacement, the poorly positioned wiring can suffer damage. In extreme cases, the compromise of the wiring can cause a short circuit, with a consequent risk of fire, which is why the Chinese authorities considered it necessary to intervene urgently. The communication highlights the potential safety risk, thus justifying the imposition of the large-scale recall.
5 Series in the crosshairs
The subsidiaries of the German automaker in China have already started inspections and have announced that they will reposition the wiring free of charge on the affected vehicles, proceeding with replacement if damage is found. The recall covers both locally produced and imported models, with BMW being obliged to contact owners for the necessary inspection and repair interventions.
