Bagnaia: “Marquez's giant step, tomorrow we will try his solutions”

A difficult start and the Sprint is a disappointment

Pecco Bagnaia had secured a decent fifth place in the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, a position that allowed him to think he could achieve a podium finish with a good start. But the start was not the best, and Pecco found himself stuck in the middle of the pack, unable to overtake – given the unique nature of the track – and ultimately finished only ninth, eight seconds behind his teammate Marc Marquez.

Bagnaia said, in statements reported by Motorsport Spagna: “I started very well, but then I had some problems entering Turn 1. Aldeguer was defending too much against me and not against the others on the inside, and so we lost too many positions. We would have exited the corner third and fourth, but then he tried not to let me pass, and I lost much more than him. Then on this track it’s difficult to overtake; I brake very late and very hard, but I lose too much in acceleration in Turns 4 and 17″.

Can Marquez help Bagnaia?

Yesterday, Pecco Bagnaia said he saw from the telemetry data that he had the same difficulties as Marc Marquez, but today his teammate seemed to shift into a higher gear: “I struggle a lot to find traction, a bit like what happened yesterday to both me and Marc. But today he made a giant leap and so perhaps we have the solution.”

Bagnaia did not hide his intention to replicate the ideas found on the other side of the garage: “I still lack a lot in acceleration, and we need to understand what the others have done because Marc struggled yesterday and today made a big step in acceleration. So perhaps we have the solution within the garage and we will try to apply it. Pecco then concluded: “I’m trying everything, I’m giving 200%. But my riding style doesn’t suit this circuit. I’m not happy with 9th place in the race, but I’m happy with the performance I’m getting here. I’m quite sure I can fight for the top 5 tomorrow.”
