Audi A2 e-tron, new details towards the debut

The debut of the new Audi A2 e-tron is approaching. The four-ring brand will present it in September this year, expanding its electric offering with the new compact entry-level model. The car is expected in Italian dealerships at the beginning of next year. The same German company has defined it as the most efficient Audi ever made. This is because the estimated energy consumption of the 140 kW (190 HP) variant with the efficiency package is 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers according to the
WLTP standard.

Audi A2 e-tron takes a step forward

Audi has focused heavily on aerodynamics. At speeds over 100 km/h, the German company explains, aerodynamic drag accounts for more than 50% of a car’s energy demand. In this sense, the new A2 e-tron 140 kW equipped with the efficiency package boasts the best aerodynamic drag coefficient (CX) among the brand’s compact cars: 0.24. What does this package include? Among other things, S line aesthetics, 19″ Audi Sport aero wheels with low rolling resistance tires, and a sporty suspension. The latter results in a reduction of the minimum ground clearance by -15 millimeters at the front axle and -10 millimeters at the rear axle.

Battery and charging

The battery of the new Audi A2 e-tron consists of a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) unit developed according to the “cell-to-pack” scheme, which sees the cells fixed directly to the accumulator casing, thus increasing energy capacity and density while keeping size contained. At the moment, the German company has not yet spoken about range, but has announced that the accumulator will have a capacity of 61 kWh with high energy density and wallbox charging efficiency approaching 90%. But not only that: bidirectional charging is also planned, with Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Home functions.

Powertrain and transmission

One last mention to the powertrain and transmission. All variants of the Audi A2 e-tron feature a permanent magnet synchronous motor at the rear axle, which guarantees maximum efficiency also thanks to power electronics based on silicon carbide semiconductors, which replace previous silicon components and ensure lower losses at partial loads, up to -33%. The electric motor is advanced, characterized by thinner rotor laminations (0.2 millimeters instead of 0.3 millimeters) to avoid increasing thermal losses. The stator windings also change, switching from a star to a delta configuration. As for the transmission system upgrade, the newly developed low-viscosity lubricant reduces friction losses and helps strengthen overall range, especially in low temperatures.
