Right of Review Alpine, FOM admits error
The classification of the Monaco GP could undergo further sensational changes days after the checkered flag. The FIA has in fact deemed Alpine’s protest admissible regarding the two penalties inflicted on Pierre Gasly for speeding in the pits, which dropped the Frenchman from third to seventh place.

Alpine managed to demonstrate new relevant evidence, which was not available to the stewards when they inflicted the penalties. The FIA considered this new evidence valid: now a review of the incident will be held, which could annul Gasly’s penalties. In this case, #10 would return to the podium, while Isack Hadjar would lose it.
The statement
“FOM, as the official timing provider for the competition, has demonstrated that the distance used to calculate the official timing (and therefore the speed in the pit lane) was inaccurate and overestimated the speed of car number 10“, this is the Federation’s statement.

Gasly’s words
Gasly was one of five drivers penalized for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane, but the only one to do so twice. The others were Franco Colapinto, Oscar Piastri, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton. Representatives from eight other teams attended the hearing, but Mercedes was not present despite Russell’s penalty. Questioned on the matter on Thursday in Barcelona, Gasly admitted that Monaco was “the most difficult day I have ever experienced in F1 and in my entire sporting career. I am referring to the sporting aspect, not 2019, when on a human level we lost Anthoine Hubert. We delivered a really excellent performance, and then as a Frenchman, that podium had a special meaning for me. I know I am quite an emotional person, but managing all the emotions I felt after the race was extremely difficult and intense“.
