Mandatory road safety education in schools: the pilot project for a new law starts from Florence

Transforming pain into concrete prevention. The Gabriele Borgogni ETS Association, together with the Lions Club and with the patronage of the Tuscan Regional Council, launches an innovative road safety education project for students. The goal is ambitious: to arrive at a bill that makes road safety a mandatory subject within Italian school curricula.

It starts with a school

The pilot project will kick off at the Florentia Sport School – ‘Dante Alighieri’ Sports Science High School in Florence. In Italy, road accidents still represent the main cause of death among young people aged 15 to 24, a dramatic statistic that the association wants to combat not only with regulations, but above all with training and a culture of responsibility.

Political support

The president of the Tuscan Regional Council, Stefania Saccardi, announced the full support of the Legislative Assembly and declared herself ready to be the first signatory of the bill. «I will be the first signatory because it is an appropriate and just initiative,» she declared. Saccardi also proposed to start collecting signatures during a solemn session of the Regional Parliament of Tuscan students, emphasizing how Tuscany can once again take on a pioneering role, as already happened with the introduction of the crime of road homicide.

The strategy

«Educating today means helping to save lives tomorrow,» added the president of the Regional Council. «Bringing road safety education into schools means investing in prevention and promoting a culture of responsibility and respect for life.»

Valentina Borgogni, president of the Association named after her brother Gabriele, who was killed in a road accident, moved those present by recounting the genesis of the project: «Every time I enter a school, I think of my brother. I think of how many dreams he had ahead of him. For over twenty years, we have chosen to transform pain into civic commitment. Young people should not learn road safety only when they get their driver’s license, but much earlier, while they are forming their way of being in the world.»

The project manager, lawyer Annalisa Parenti, illustrated the innovative structure of the initiative: road safety education lessons will be integrated transversally into different school subjects, with the contribution of expert professionals. Physics and science will address the effects of speeding and distraction with an engineer; law will analyze the regulatory framework; motor sciences will focus on trauma and resuscitation. Among the professionals involved are psychologist Fabiana Cortini, orthopedic surgeon Monica D’Elia, engineer Stefano Guarnieri, the commander of the local police of Rignano sull’Arno Matteo Maria Berti, and entrepreneur Paolo Sodi. During the conference, Marcello Marchioni, a historical figure of the association, who passed away last April, was remembered with affection.
