Spa is ready to host the second act of the challenge between Toyota and Ferrari. The Japanese giant is looking for confirmation after the victory at Imola, while the Prancing Horse is determined to take revenge. All the conditions are there to succeed, on a track that highlights the strengths of the 499P, not coincidentally winners of the last three 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Ardennes circuit, in fact, is the best possible testing ground ahead of the French marathon and as such will say whether the updated Toyota can aim for the big win in the most important race of the season.

Appetizer for Le Mans
The 6 Hours of Spa is now a classic of the endurance world championship, having become a dress rehearsal for Le Mans. Despite the necessary differences, the Belgian circuit is the one that most closely approaches the high speeds of the French track, so much so that some already arrive with extended gear ratios intended for the 24 Hours. At Spa as at Le Mans, to win it is necessary to express a lot of speed on the long straights, an area where the different performance of each car is felt firsthand. The two-stage BoP, with a correction of maximum power above 250 km/h, was supposed to level the differences between the various cars, but reality has proven it insufficient and that aerodynamic efficiency continues to be decisive. The Ardennes track is also very demanding due to the roughness of the asphalt, another aspect in common with Le Mans.
Overall, Spa is a whole different world compared to Imola, requiring completely different qualities from teams, drivers, and cars. Unlike the Italian circuit, the Belgian one offers numerous overtaking opportunities, outlining a completely different scenario for the race. On the banks of the Santerno, everything was played on positional advantage, increasing the emphasis on qualifying and pit-stop management. Spa will instead be a 6-hour race to be played on pace, with the added awareness that lengthening stints ensures greater flexibility to react to the whims of the weather, always fickle in Belgium.
Ferrari Opportunity
The obvious favorite can only be Ferrari, winner in 2025, very close to victory in 2024 and convincing already at its debut in 2023. Spa is a track tailor-made for the 499P, a project that makes aerodynamic efficiency one of its cornerstones, a choice rewarded by three consecutive wins at Le Mans. Bringing home the first-place trophy is a must for the Maranello Scuderia, forced to set aside important points in view of a calendar that will be decidedly tougher in the second half of the season. Achieving this will not be taken for granted, since at Imola the competition showed it had closed the gap with developments, taking advantage of the absence of updates on the Prancing Horse’s Hypercars.

There is great curiosity to see how Toyota will perform. It will be a test of truth for the renewed TR010, which will have to prove it has improved efficiency on high-speed circuits, the main Achilles’ heel of past years. The hopes of fighting for victory at Le Mans will pass through the performance in Belgium, where Ferrari will not be the only opponent. Cadillac, for example, is another car known for its competitiveness on the straights, but too often hampered by less than perfect execution by team and drivers.
The BoP Variable
The balance of power in Belgium will also depend on the Balance of Performance tables, which FIA and ACO have recklessly decided to no longer make public. The exact procedure for calculating the BoP continues to be ignored, of which it is only known that it starts from data collected on track in the most representative races. Imola provided the first real feedback on the updated cars, but it is reasonable to think that values from Spa and Le Mans in 2025 will also be taken into account. We will have to wait for the verdict of the track to understand what the values in play will be and whether Ferrari will have the opportunity to return to victory, without which the defense of the title could already be compromised.
