More and more leader

There is no two without three. Italy is finally getting used to having its own superstar in Formula 1: Andrea Kimi Antonelli also won the Miami GP and now has 20 points lead in the standings over teammate George Russell, who finished fourth under the checkered flag more due to others’ faults, mistakes, and bad luck than his own merits. On track, the 19-year-old Mercedes talent led like a veteran, not getting flustered after yet another imperfect start and not yielding to pressure when, in the second half of the race, he found himself in first position but closely marked by Lando Norris behind him. But Antonelli showed his maturity also off the track, at the microphone of Sky Sport F1 in the traditional post-race interview.

Victory with a special dedication

This was a complicated race – said the #12 of Mercedes – at the start I had no confidence because all the start practice sessions had not been good. We changed the target many times compared to the start target, so I had no trust. In the end, the start was not even that bad, but I made a misjudgment with Charles: he braked a little earlier than I expected and so I went wide to avoid him. Then I was lucky with how things went: there was a battle and I made a mistake with energy use, in fact Lando passed me. The pace was good, let’s say we were much faster compared to the Sprint. But it was not easy, I had to stay very focused during the race because I knew that any small mistake could have allowed Lando to get closer. It was not easy, but I am happy to have brought it home“.

“Challenge between me and Sinner on who wins more? No, you have to stay focused. The championship is still long – Antonelli concluded – and you have to stay focused and keep raising the bar. George will definitely be very strong in Canada. Last year he was really fast, so we have to stay focused and keep working. Surely now I will enjoy the moment, but then I will focus on Canada because it will be important after another two and a half weeks to come back even stronger. I conclude by dedicating this victory to Alex Zanardi. Only applause, Kimi.
