Tesla has launched a new six-seater version of the Model Y in India, named Model Y L. With this introduction, the US company expands a product range that has been relatively limited in the Indian market so far, arriving after a “discreet” entry last July. The variant is distinguished by an extended wheelbase and, according to the company’s website, is offered at 6.2 million rupees, corresponding to approximately 66,000 dollars.

Tesla Model Y L debuts in India
The launch comes amidst a rapidly evolving demand landscape. In India, consumer interest in larger, high-end vehicles is growing, often equipped with technologies such as touchscreen displays and panoramic roofs. This trend helps sustain SUV demand across the market, with Tesla thus seeking to attract an audience willing to upgrade in terms of space and features. It should also be remembered that Tesla landed in India less than a year ago with the imported Model Y, but faced a significant obstacle: the high 100% import tariff, which makes the final price significantly higher compared to other markets.

Extended wheelbase version
Today, the Model Y in India is positioned in a decidedly narrow segment. The rear-wheel-drive variant is priced at approximately 6 million rupees, while the long-range rear-wheel-drive version costs 6.8 million rupees. Considering that the majority of cars sold in the country are estimated to cost less than $22,000, Tesla therefore operates in a niche. The promise, however, is that lower running, maintenance, and electric charging costs can allow buyers to recover a significant portion of their investment, up to about a third in four or five years, as indicated by Sharad Agarwal, head of Tesla India.
