The crisis in the Middle East is widening the gap between electric and internal combustion cars, increasing the economic advantages of battery-powered vehicles, especially regarding refueling costs. This is according to Federcarrozzieri, the association of Italian body shops, which conducted an ad hoc study. According to the report, for the same number of kilometers traveled, an electric car today can cost up to 53% less than a diesel car, with a significant impact on the ordinary expenses of those who use their car daily.

Electric cars, costs halved compared to diesel
In detail, considering average consumption and energy prices on the market, to travel 100 km, an average of 5.6 euros is spent with an e-car when charging at home via the domestic network. If, on the other hand, charging takes place at a public charging station, “pay-as-you-go” rates are higher: the cost varies based on charging speed and time of use, but by using subscriptions and packages from operators, the expense can significantly decrease, settling indicatively between 6.8 and 10.4 euros per 100 km.

The Federcarrozzieri study
The differences, projected over annual mileage, become even more pronounced. In Italy, a car travels an average of about 10,200 km per year. In this situation, the charging costs of an electric car are estimated at 571 euros annually if using the domestic network, while they rise to between 693 and 1,060 euros per year if public charging stations with subscriptions and packages are used. At current average fuel prices, the annual cost for refueling at the pump is about 1,183 euros for a petrol car and 1,208 euros for a diesel car: from this, according to the association, the savings for an electric car can exceed 52% compared to diesel, with an estimated saving of about 637 euros annually.
